I made this homemade baby doll diaper cake for my daughter-in-law’s baby shower celebrating our first granddaughter (Savannah Elise Russell) who was born January 30, 2003. I had never made one before and can’t even remember what prompted the idea.
I found some miniature dolls (at Walmart) and a larger one I imagined popping out of the top. That doll, by the way, ended up being her favorite until she was about four and is still around somewhere in a toy box! I bought a cardboard cake disc and glued lace around the rim to simulate a traditional cake platform. Then I placed a plastic cake cover on it and glue gunned that down onto the cardboard.
I took newborn disposables, rolled them and secured them with rubber bands and placed them around the plastic cake dome, securing them with ribbon to keep them in place and start the next layer. I used a smaller plastic bowl for the next layer and repeated for the top. I decorated with miniature dolls, little silk roses, and baby bottles filled with pastel grasses.
