Coolest Pregnant Belly Cake

This Homemade Pregnant Belly Cake is a cake I made for a lady at work. She was leaving for Maternity leave so we had a potluck for her. I made this with Vanilla Cake, and Chocolate cake. I made the breasts with chocolate cake, and a “breast cake pan”. I used vanilla for the belly, and used a round flat cake pan, and a half soccer ball cake pan to make sure it was high enough to get proper dimensions.

I normally make my cake batters by hand but with only a limited amount of money for this one I used cake batter bought in a box. I ended up using, 3 boxes in total. (2 vanilla, 1 chocolate.

I made my own buttercream icing, and marshmallow fondant.

Buttercream icing:

Ingredients:

3C powdered (icing)sugar

1/3 C. butter softened

1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

1-2 tsp. milk

–> in large bowl with high sides mix icing usgar and butter with wooden spoon or electric mixer on low speed. Add Vanilla and 1 tsp milk.

–> Beat in just enough of remaining milk to make the icing smooth and spreadable.

*if frosting is too thick, add a bit of milk to make it more spreadable

** if too thin, add more powdered sugar until correct consistency.

-> this icing is grittier, and I use it for children’s cakes or “dirty icing” for under fondant.

I set up my cake on the board, and dirty iced the entire thing to make sure it was covered and so the fondant does not go hard.

Fondant:

– 8 ounces miniature marshmallows

– 4 C. powdered Icing sugar

– 2 tbsp. water

– Colouring/ favouring if desired

– 1/2 C. Lard (I always have more on hand)

– Extra powdered sugar for dusting

–> Dust counter or large cutting board with icing sugar. (I use lard first then sugar on top)

–> Place marshmallows and water in a large microwave safe bowl.

–> Microwave for 45 seconds, remove and stir, and then Microwave for 2 minutes stiring every 30 seconds.

– cook until entirely smooth and free of lumps.

–> If colouring is desired add now, unless multiple colours are needed.

–> Add the powdered sugar and begin to stir with the spatula. Stir until sugar begins to imcorporate and beomces impossible to stir anymore.

–> Scrape marshmallow/sugar mixture onto the powdered area

– cover hands with lard (so you dont get stuck to the marshmallow mixture as it is VERY Sticky!

–> begin to knead the mixture like bread dough, workign the sugar into the marshmallows. If it is still too sticky add more sugar. If it gets too tough, add a dash of water,

* note: knead until smooth, adding too much sugar will make it difficult to work with.

–>once it is in a smooth ball it is ready to use

– if you do not want to use now tightly wrap in cling wrap, it can be stored in cool place or in fridge until later use. It needs to be kneaded to become workable again if stored. Microwaving for 5 seconds at a time, until it is workable works aswell.

–> while working it, if it becomes too stiff you can put in microwave for a couple seconds to warm it and make it workable again (bonus with marshmallows rather than normal fondant).

Finally I coloured my Fondant and rolled it out. I used 5 pieces for the body. one for each breast, oen for the belly, one for the ribbon and one for the piece between the breasts to make it look like a well incorporated dress. I used a fondant smoother to smooth the belly, and I also used icing sugar on my hands to smoth it out. I used fondant cutters, and presses for the decorations.

It tasted amazing ( first time using fondant) and everyone LOVED IT!

  1. I know this may be a dumb question, but what is powdered icing sugar. Is that just powdered, confectioner’s sugar. I have a cake to make and need some fondant to make a small mermaid, I don’t like the fondant. I don’t want to order a big thing of Satin Ice for just a little bit, so I wanted to use your recipe. I want to make sure I have the right stuff. The cake is great!
    Thanks
