Butterfly Cake

I used a strawberry cake mix for this butterfly cake because I wanted the inside to be pink, in a 9 inch round cake pan. After cooling I put it in the freezer for a few minutes to hopefully make it easier to cut.

Then I cut it in half and placed round edges together, a little off center. I cut a small notch out of both sides. I used Wilton food coloring. Leaf green and yellow for the green and Rose for the pink parts. I also used a tube of black gel to make my outlines first.

The body is a Twinkie. I bought the frosting mix in a box so that the consistency would be right for the star tip. Also, I bought premade fondant for the blue base. I rolled it out with a rolling pen that had the designs in it already and put it over my pizza stone.

Then I placed the whole thing on a cake stand. That’s it. Not hard to make, but did give my hand a cramp squeezing out all of those stars.

  2. Thanks for posting this – it’s the perfect inspiration for my daughter’s 4th birthday cake. I’m going to try it using a 12″ round pan for the wings with cupcakes sitting on their sides for the body. If it turns out as pretty as yours I’ll post a photo!
