This homemade Barbie birthday cake was made for a friend who wanted “Barbie & pink!” The top tier was inspired by a Barbie cake I saw online, and I really wanted to try the quilting technique so that’s what I did on the bottom tier.
These are 5” & 8” tiers, covered in pink and white marshmallow fondant. To do the quilting I placed a triangle from a geometry set on the cake board with the angled side against the cake and used my fondant cutting wheel to lightly imprint the lines (before doing this I measured the diameter of the cake and decided where my lines would go by placing a small mark at each interval).
Turn the triangle around to do the lines going the other way. I then went over the lines with my fondant quilting wheel and then painted the cake with luster dust.
On the top tier I placed vertical strips of black fondant (I used Satin Ice for all the black because I hate coloring fondant black) around the cake. I then placed pink fondant draping around the top edge (see the Wilton website for instructions on this technique) and painted them with luster dust.
I used flower plunger cutters for all the flowers on the top tier, as well as on the board, and added black royal icing dots in the centers.
The cameo is fondant with the Barbie logo painted on with black gel icing color. The pillow and “K” are fondant with a little added tylose powder for strength. The trim around the bottoms of the tiers and around the cake board are ribbon, and Barbie is a Happy Meal Toy.
This cake is too cute!
