I wanted to make a Barbie cake for my daughter’s 1st birthday, so I purchased the Dolly Varden tin from a Spotlight store (Australia) and used the Betty Crocker Moist Vanilla cake in it (2 boxes), also I did a chocolate fudge cake for the base. Getting the cooking times right in the tin made it difficult for me, as the top cooked well but the bottom was still slop so I covered the top and slow cooked it through, but by the time that happened there was quite a hardened crust around the whole cake, not burnt just hard, so I didn’t end up serving the cake (thank goodness I had the fudge).
I bought a cheap Barbie doll, undressed her and wrapped her legs in cling film so I could keep her for my daughter when she’s bigger. The icing I used a combination of the Betty Crocker ready made frosting and the Wilton frosting in the tubes that you can screw the attachments on to for detailing. I used a star shaped for the front and skirt and had intended on doing ruffles for the dress but it didn’t look good enough so I smoothed it with the bumpy edge of a cake server knife. I was really pleased with the result.
The small cupcake in Barbie’s hand is just the same cake mix, but a nice touch I thought and a way to add the candle without stabbing the doll!! Everyone was so impressed and couldn’t believe I’d done it myself! It was the first time I’d tried anything like this and although it was time consuming, it wasn’t that difficult, just required patience. I’ve set the standard now for her 2nd birthday I think!!
