My daughter wanted a dolly cake for her third birthday, so I did a bit of research on the net. I found that people seemed to have had the most trouble with the length of Barbies legs, and recommended that they either be cut off(!), a shorter doll (that’s not Barbie) be used, or that a second cake be added underneath.
I decided to try a different way, using two cupcakes cut in half and fixed in place with toothpicks and icing. The toothpicks can then be removed once the icing has set. This gives a lovely ‘bustle’ effect, like you see on a proper princess dress, and also covers up the shortfall, where Barbies is still exposed.
I made the material effect by adding on sugar butterflies (you could use absolutely anything – I got these at my local supermarket very cheaply). Little premade sugar roses and cabachons (also from the local supermarket) finished the effect. My decorating is more enthusiastic than skilled, but I couldn’t find anywhere else that used the same idea, so I thought I’d share it.
