My daughter is having a birthday party with her best friend, who happens to have the same birthday. Their party isn’t for 3 weeks. But I wanted to do a trial run to be sure I could do it.
I am glad I made it before the birthday. I learned some things about baking a cake so large. The bottom layer is 12″ and the top is two 8″ layers.
The paw prints (Thanks to Michala D for the paw print idea.) and balls on the bottom are fondant, Wilton pre-made…I cannot tell a lie. :-)
A couple of tips I learned. A 12 inch cake takes a lot longer to cook than I anticipated. I probably cooked it more than 45-50 minutes, give or take. I put 4 cups of batter into the pan…a little too much. It rose probably an 1 inch above the pan top. I should have used a 3″ deep pan instead of 2″. I used just under 2 cups for each of the two 8″ layers.
I highly recommend using the cake leveling strips by Wilton. They truly work at giving you an even top on your cake, rather than the dome.
I’ll be happy to give more information if anyone needs it.
