My daughter requested a My Little Pony Cake, “pinkie pie pony” cookie cake for her 3 year old birthday party. I’m not even close to being a seasoned cake decorator~but I really enjoy preparing my kids’ cakes myself. I took the advice of other decorators on the site and printed out a coloring sheet of my desired “My Little Pony” image.
I then cut it out *inside* the lines. I placed it on the cake surface and used it as a template as I traced outside of it with buttercream frosting (I found the recipe here… and it’s YUMMY stuff). After tracing, I removed it from the cake. I then filled in the outline with the star shaped frosting tipper in a dot pattern.
Afterwards, I used a flat tip (which had texturizing lines on it) to draw in the mane and tail. I just used a flowing motion to draw it, and it turned out great! Lastly, I outlined/edged everything in sparkling cake gel (found in most all stores)in order to give it definition and a finished look. To make the eye~I colored and cut out the eye from the coloring sheet. I then wrapped it in clear plastic wrap (to avoid marker coming in contact with the cake) and placed it on. I will note that if you’re unsure of your decorating abilities~this is a great (and VERY forgiving) method.
Also, the cookie cake is a great option, as the icing comes off very cleanly if you make a mistake. I found the recipe for the giant chocolate chip cookie cake on Emeril’s website. It was so good and so cute that none believed I made it. And, my daughter squealed with joy! Have fun.
