I made a Mater cake for our son Cameron’s fourth birthday.
The base of the cake was two 9″ x 13″ cakes, layered with filling in between and frosted with buttercream. The sand was actually crushed graham crackers and the road was crushed Oreo cookies. Mater was carved from two frozen Sarah Lee pound cakes. The pound cake was great to carve because it doesn’t get crumbly like regular cake.
Mater was covered in brown fondant while white fondant was used for the windows and eyes. His wheels were mini chocolate-covered doughnuts. The valve covers were kit kats and the air filter was a Reese’s peanut butter cup. The headlights, taillights and light on the roof were all Dots candies.
The boom was made of kit kats and the tow cable was rolled-out black fondant, wrapped around two Dots candies stuck together with frosting. The side mirrors were brown fondant and were attached with toothpicks.
It was a long night putting the cake together. However, it was worth every minute seeing Cameron’s face light up, and his wide grin from ear to ear, when he saw his Mater birthday cake!
Your attention to detail and creativity makes this such a fun cake…love the eyes & the donut tires!
