I got a lot of great ideas from this website: Using a boxed cake mix to make a pound cake (see allrecipes.com “Grandmother’s Pound Cake I), baked in two loaf pans. I kept one cake about the same except for a little carving on one end to resemble the front of the car. The other cake was cut in half the short way and shaped to resemble the top of the car.
The remaining cake was cut to make the tail fin, which was then attached to the rest of the cake using toothpicks. I frosted the whole cake with chocolate buttercream frosting. I then made marshmallow fondant and tinted it blue using Betty Crocker’s classic gel food coloring.
I rolled it out and covered the entire cake with it. I added detail with other colors of fondant. The black is writing gel. Wheels are donuts–thanks for that idea!
My son is thrilled with the result. I had a lot of fun doing it. It was my first attempt at using fondant. It took a long time, but I’d do it again.
