I made this Curious George birthday cake for a friend’s son’s birthday. They had seen a “Curious George” cake made with a bowl instead of a pan, but I didn’t think it looked all that much like Curious George, so (with their permission) I found a good birthday-appropriate picture on the internet.
It’s a two layer 8″ scratch yellow cake with vanilla buttercream. I used a combination of lemon yellow and sunshine yellow for the background/between layers. I used a dark chocolate frosting darkened with black frosting color until it was black enough for me to do the outlining, and a milk chocolate frosting for George himself.
Once the cake was frosted with yellow and allowed to “crust over” a bit, I traced the outline of the picture onto the top of the cake with a toothpick, then went over that with the black frosting. I piped in all the areas, then smoothed them with a damp paint brush. I tried to stick with the color scheme from the book covers (yellow, blue, and red) for edge decorations and balloons.
