I created this Dora Saves the Crystal Kingdom Doll Cake for my daughter’s 2nd birthday. She and her bigger sister are HUGE Dora fans and Crystal Kingdom was the latest Dora movie out at the time. So I gave it a shot. I got my inspiration from this site and much like others here, I found that I could use a standard bundt cake pan for the “dress” part of the cake.
In my case I had to make an extra 9″ round for the bottom to supplement the height of the doll that I had to use but that would be different for everyone. In covering the cake/doll, I used a marshmallow fondant recipe I found on the internet for the bulk of the dress covering. I left it white and chose to use the Color Mist Food Color Spray in pink. I also cut out little diamonds from the white fondant and put some clear glitter gel (edible of course) on those to make it sparkle a little.
For the yellow and purple on the dress, I used the pre-made/pre-colored Wilton tubes of icing that you can generally get at the grocery store.
I also made a crystal kingdom city cake based on a picture in the book. For this cake, I just did a simple 2 layer strawberry and yellow cake mix rectangle cake. I covered the cake in white marshmallow fondant (a recipe I found on the internet). Then I free-handed (with the backside of a paring knife) a general outline of a picture of the Crystal Kingdom that I found in my daughters’ ready-to-read Crystal Kingdom book. Then, I used the food coloring markers to color in the buildings and trees and the palace. I added colored sanding sugar – and glitter gel to make the sugar stick – to most of the grass along the sidewalk, the ocean, the sun, the rubies on top of the palace and a little to the crystal holder to try and give off the appearance of glass. I molded the crystals in the crystal holder from white chocolate and then tried to color them with food color markers and sparkle gel.
It’s certainly no professional job, but my girls loved it and that’s what matters most to me.
Love the Dora one with the dress. I’m going to attempt this one on my own this year. My mom usually does our cakes but since she is recovery from back surgery, I’m on my own!!! :o(
