My two year old loves Dora so that seemed like a great idea for a party. I searched this site for just the perfect cake and found several I loved. I decided to do a Dora scene birthday cake. I took ideas from several cakes I saw here and created this.
The base is a 16 inch square white cake (single layer). I iced it in green homemade butter cream. I used a grass tip and made several tufts of grass around the cake and added candy flowers (found them at the candy store and thought they’d look great). Dora’s house is made from rice crispy treats and covered with golden yellow butter cream. I used orange and blue “airheads” candy that I softened in the microwave for a few seconds to make the door and window trim. The roof tiles are mini orange slices. I added butter cream accents for the vines and placed small candy flowers on the house. Crocodile Lake is made from clear piping gel (purchased at the cake decorating shop) that I colored blue.
The crocodile is made from fondant (my mother made it, yea Mom!). The Grumpy Old Troll’s bridge was made from pirouline cookies. I drilled holes in each cookie and threaded green licorice strings through and tied a knot to hold them in place. The Grumpy Old Troll was made of fondant (again yea Mom!). The Dora, Boots and Swiper figures were all toys.
It was a lot of work, but my daughter loved it. The kids at the party even ate the house!
