I made this Pretty Dora Cake for my daughter’s 2nd birthday. She loves Dora so I thought I would give this a shot! I used a 1.5 qt Pyrex bowl for the dress and a 8in square for the ‘platform.’ I had to bake the bowl for almost an hour and I set the temperature back 25 degrees due to the uneven baking, but it came out very nice and moist! I let it set in the refridgerator over night to hold it’s form. I cut out a 2in circle for Dora and just pushed her through it and filled in any surrounding area with icing. Dora is wearing a swimsuit but I couldn’t match the color so I piped on a top for her.
I also made cupcakes and decorated them with flowers for surrounding Dora. I used the Wilton 5 piece tip set. The star tip for the flowers and the circle tip for the polka dots. I had to keep putting the cake in the freezer because the icing was so warm from me handling it in the decorating bags, but that worked just fine. I made all of the icing from scratch. It was a vanilla buttercream recipe I found on Foodnetwork.com….and it was delicious!!! Everyone raved about how smooth and creamy it was. (Also made chocolate buttercream)-One batch can cover about 24 cupcakes and I used 2 1/2 batches. I think the cake turned out pretty good for my first cake attempt ever! The only thing was that we had our party outside and by the time all of our guests arrived Dora was sweating a lot, but she never dripped! In all it took about 3 1/2 hours to decorate the cake and the cupcakes. We also had the remaining cupcakes on the side as well.
I can’t wait to see what my daughter will want next year!
