This Hello Kitty birthday cake was made for my friend’s 21st birthday. I really didn’t think it was going to turn out this good but I guess it did!
I started off with a regular pan sized cake
about 9″ by 13″ and I let it cool overnight.
After I had cut out the shape of Hello Kitty’s face. I used a this template for her face.
http://style.pwblogs.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/hello-kitty-color.gif. I just enlarged it a bit.
I pinned down the template on the cake with toothpicks while I was cutting it so it would stay still.
I then made butter cream frosting for the crumb coat. (I would recommend using a butter cream recipe from foodnetwork.com ). I applied that and let it cool.
While it was cooling I homemade marshmallow fondant. I dyed some of it black (for the eyes and whiskers), yellow ( for the nose), and pink ( for the bow ). I hand sculpted everything.
Then, I applied vanilla frosting to the cake.
I put some water in the frosting to make it smooth and while I was applying the frosting I dipped the knife in hot water often to give it a smooth texture. I applied everything else.
FOR THE FLOWERS: (that’s optional). I put the flowers there because I didn’t want to put the candles on the cake, so I placed the candles in the middle of the flowers. It turned out great!
ps. flowers were made from my left over fondant!
