I found this site, while looking for photos of Hello Kitty cakes, and was totally inspired. I made this cake for my daughter’s tenth birthday party and hated cutting it!
I used a 14″ round cake pan with those good old magic cake strips. I used two boxes of a store-bought funfetti mix and baked it at 325°. I carved out the shape of Kitty’s head, using a paper template of her head, made from a poster, that just happened to be the exact size I needed. I made buttercream icing, using only butter and no crisco, and dirty iced the cake with this first. I then covered it with fondant.
I made the bow and eyes from fondant. I only had white fondant, so I used some gel coloring and kneaded the color into the fondant, which was time-consuming but worth it. I didn’t have gloves to keep the color from staining my hands, so I kneaded it in a ziploc bag until most of the color was blended and then finished it with bare hands. I used black licorice for the whiskers and a jelly bean for the nose.
No one at the party could believe that I hadn’t hired a professional to make this cake! It really was not hard, just time-consuming. It was as yummy as it was cute!
Can you tell me, you used 2 boxes, did you make two cakes and stack on top o each other? where did you get the fondant from and how much did you need?
