My friend’s nephew is obsessed with Mickey Mouse and wanted a Mickey Mouse Birthday Cake head shaped cake. I work in a bakery and decorate cakes but, unfortunately Mickey Mouse is a copyright, and the company I work for is not allowed to do the cake unless it is different from the actual shape. I took the liberty to make this cake for my friend at home.
I have a 12” round pan and two 6” round pans. We used 3 packages of Duncan Hines Confetti Cake, because it’s his nephew’s favorite flavor. I made the mixes together, sprayed the pans and baked the cakes. I cut the tops of the cake from the pan to level out the cake then dumped them onto plates and placed them in the freezer for about an hour. It is much easier to ice frozen cakes because the crumbs will get in your icing.
I purchased a full sheet board and box to place the cake in from the bakery I work at. I ice the cakes upside down, because it is easier to ice and its more level than right side up. The icing we used was Whipped icing, also purchased from our bakery, I used food dye for the face, and regular black and red food dye for the head and tongue. I started to decorate the face first, because it is the skin color and lighter, if you did the black first, using the tip around the face would cause the black to smear into the lighter icing. After decorating the face I decorated the ears.
For more detail to pop out around the face after I iced the ears and the rest of the head, I outlined the face with a small tip. It distinguishes the facial features.
