My mom made her homemade chocolate cake then we did a crumb coat. I picked a Max & Ruby picture that I liked and printed it out. Then I took a piece of parchment paper, stuck it under the picture and put it on a pillow. Then I poked holes in it with a needle following the pattern.
Then when you have enough holes in it to decipher all the detail of the picture you put the parchment on your cake bumpy side down and push lightly into the cake. The holes should leave an imprint of the pattern. You then take a small tipped pastry bag with black icing in it and trace the pattern. I then used various tips with different colored frosting to finish decorating.
I don’t like fondant nor do I like spreading frosting around the cake, the effect IMO isn’t as nice but doing individual stars is very time consuming and my hands were killing me when done.
My mom always assists me, the more I do the more it is about moral support. We always use homemade icing very similar to Wilton’s recipe. I don’t like using cake pans with a design in them as much because they rarely come out of the pan easily.
