This Ariel The Little Mermaid cake was for my daughter’s 3rd birthday. I didn’t care much for the new Wilton Ariel cake pan, so I bought an old one on EBay. It came without the plastic insert of her face and body, but the pan was cheap.
I recently started making cakes for friends and family after I was given a nice set of decorator tips. This was my first time using fondant too. After baking the cake,(used two mixes to fill the pan to 2/3 full with batter, the directions only say one, but it’s awfully thin that way.) And removing it from the pan, I used the pre-packaged Wilton fondant in plain white.
Tinting it peachy flesh color was surprisingly easy. After tinting, rolled it out to a little more than 1/8″, using powdered sugar to keep it from sticking, then molded it onto the back of the cake pan, (also dusted with powdered sugar). I cut out two tiny teardrop shapes from white fondant for the whites of her eyes and a little moon shape for her teeth, then smoothed it on top of the peach fondant. Using a small paintbrush and Wilton food coloring gel, I painted the facial features and shading, then cut away the extra fondant leaving behind the part you can see in the small picture, (taken later because I didn’t plan on documenting this while I was making it!)
I gave the whole cake a layer of blue buttercream frosting, then used decorator tip 16 for the hair and to star fill her lower body, leaving the top of her hair and the flowers. I then carefully peeled the fondant face and body off the cake pan, and placed it on the cake. Next I filled in the rest of the hair and details. For the tail fin and flowers I used tip #102.
What a stunning cake! You should be really proud.
My mom got this cake pan from goodwill and realized after why it was so cheap… ha ha. Without the insert this cake is very difficult to make. Feeling brave I decided to follow the instructions above. It was hard, I am not the artist that this person is. :-) However, the cake did come out beautiful. I trimmed Ariel down a bit from the pan mold. I made the flower for her hair and hands with Royal Icing using the pan as a guide to give a 3D effect.
Does anyone still have this cake pan? I am wanting to make this cake for my daughter’s 4th birthday and can not find the cake pan anywhere. I really don’t like the new ariel cake pan design. Thanks–Katy
Does anyone still have the full body Ariel Cake pan? I am looking for one for my daughter’s birthday and can not find one to purchase. I am don’t like the newer Wilton Airel face. I would like to purchase a pan if possible. I will check back at this site for responses.
