This Spiderman Cake was for a co-worker’s son’s 3rd birthday. All I was told was that he LOVES Spider-man. I found the Wilton Spider-man cake pan at my local library. I use the Wilton method for all my cakes; this ensures very moist cakes, not to mention, they are DELICIOUS. This cake was Red Velvet.
After baking the shaped cake, I thought it would be cool to make a second layer for a 3-D effect. I baked a round layer just slightly larger than the shaped layer. I always freeze my cakes before decorating. This makes it easier to move the cakes if needed, and if it accidentally cracks,it’s as easy as “gluing”it back together with icing! I referred to pictures to get the colors just right.
I started by outlining the features with black icing.I iced the bottom layer smooth and “starred in” the red and blue areas of the shaped cake. For the eyes, I filled the area in with grey icing. For the final touch, I made the round layer look like it was a giant spider web. Everyone loved it!
