This is a Spiderman Birthday Cake I made for my son’s 4th birthday. I started with the Wilton Ladybug pan to get the basic shape of Spiderman’s head. I made a double layer cake, and then carved around the sides (cut off the lady bug legs, etc) to get the right shape for the mask. I then covered the cake in red marshmallow fondant (it took a long time and a lot of red gel to turn the fondant the perfect color of red – so it takes patience!).
I then used a ruler to lightly mark the straight lines for the web on the mask, and then went over those with black gel. I then went around the cake and created a web pattern in between the straight lines by draping the gel until I got all the way around to the outside of the cake. For the eyes, I just cut one “template” eye out of white fondant, to use as a basis for creating the other eye pieces. I then cut the second eye out of white fondant – then I placed the white fondant eyes on top of black, and cut around, leaving a black border around the white eyes. I wrapped my cake board in Spiderman wrapping paper to keep with the theme, and just placed the cake on top and finished it off with a black border around the base of the cake on the board.
It was a fun, easy project!
