I made this SpongeBob Cake Design for my daughter Eleanor’s 5th Birthday last year as she’d asked for one. The cake was a 5 egg quick Madeira recipe that I always use as I find this easy to shape and it’s not too “crumby.” The cake is covered in natural yellow fondant icing and the arms, legs and eyes are all shaped using coloured fondant icing.
The fondant icing shorts were just laid over the yellow base. I always find black icing the hardest to colour but read a tip that if you add cocoa powder to it first then it’s a lot easier to darken with black food colour. As it’s quite a basic shape and I’m not great at bag icing I didn’t find this cake too difficult.
However, this year (2 weeks time) is going to prove a bigger a challenge as Eleanor would like a castle cake. I will be using this site to help me loads as there are some beautiful examples on here. I did attempt one for her 3rd birthday and it was a disaster (too embarrassed to up load any of those photos!) If this years works out, then I’ll be happy to share my pictures.
