This cake was inspired by a SpongeBob cake that I saw on this website! My nephew has been asking for a Mr. Squarepants cake for months now, so I thought I’d give it a shot! I baked a white cake using just a basic box cake mix in a 9×13″ pan. After it cooled I whipped up some buttercream icing from the Wilton website. I like this recipe because it really holds together and stays put.
Recipe:
1/2cup solid Veg. Short.
1/2 cup butter, 1 tsp. vanilla, 4 cups sifted confectioner’s sugar, 2 tbsp. milk. Cream short. and butter together, add slowly confectioner’s sugar, vanilla and milk. Keep refrigerated when not in use. Yield-3 cups.
I used Wilton brand concentrated icing gels to tint the colors I needed. I find these colors are brighter as opposed to liquid food coloring, and do not thin the icing. I tinted approx. 3/4 cup of icing with lemon yellow, 1/2 cup icing with brown, 1/4 cup with “no taste” red, 1/4 cup black, and left 3/4 cup white. I also used the Wilton clear piping gel and tinted about 1/2 cup with black, and just a few drops with blue for the eyes and a few tablespoons for the “sponge holes” tinted with yellow, green and a bit of brown for that yellow-green color.
Using 1/4 cup or so of the white I thinly covered the entire cake with icing. I used a toothpick to trace out the basic features, then I used a piping bag with a Wilton #3 piping tip to pipe out the features in black as well as for the blue in the eyes and the yellow-green for the holes. I switched over to the #16 star tip and squeezed tiny stars over the entire cake in the appropriate colors: brown for the pants, white for the shirt, red for the tie and tongue, yellow for the face, black for the belt. I used a scallop tip to scallop a border around the outer edge. I sprinkled some red sugar on the border to give it a punch of color. Around the board, I tried to use icing to make those little “Hawaiian” flowers that you see in Bikini Bottom, but I smooshed it in transit, as I was holding the cake on my lap to take it safely to the party! I would use markers next time!
