This Thomas the Train Scene Cake was done for a friend of my husband who wanted a Thomas cake with a keepsake on it. I started this cake with a 10″ Madeira cake, filled with Buttercream and covered with white ready to roll fondant, also covering the cake board. I then used a new bathroom sponge and green food colouring and dabbed all over the cake to make it look like grass.
The tunnel is made from a 4″ Victoria sponge filled with jam and cream, cut in half and covered with the dabbed white fondant. I used coloured fondant (coloured using food colouring paste for all colours except brown which I coloured using cocoa powder) to do all the decorations. To colour the rocks I used a very small amount of black colouring and didn’t quite mix it all in to give the marble rock effect. To make the blue fondant pond look shiny I brushed it with a tiny amount of olive oil.
Thomas the tank engine is a die cast figure, new, cleaned and sterilized so the child had a keepsake to play with after.
