My son really wanted a runway and airplane cake. After looking around for ideas I decided to buy a boxed cake mix and follow the directions to make the 9×13 cake. After letting the cake cool, I tinted several scoops of white icing green with 8 drops of green food coloring. I frosted the outer edges and left and right top borders of the cake with the green frosting. I added green sugar sprinkles to the top edges. Next, I tinted the rest of the white frosting with 5 drops of black food coloring to make the grey for the concrete runway. After spreading the runway I took white icing and piped the runway design. The white borders are done with a thicker tip and the rest with a small round tip. The final addition to the cake was a new airplane we purchased from the Museum of Flight gift shop. We wrapped the landing gear with aluminum foil to keep the plane clean and used a wooden match to tilt the plan like it is taking off. Our son loved his cake, it was relatively easy to make and decorate and he loves playing with his new airplane.
