My son has an addiction with the Baby Einstein DVD’s since he was three months old! So of course when his first birthday was coming up I knew what I was doing. Thing is I couldn’t find a Baby Einstein caterpillar cake I thought was cute enough to do. So I purchased all the items online for the theme including the first birthday candle with the caterpillar climbing up a number 1. I then thought “I can replicate the candle!” So that’s what I did.
I used the Wilton #1 pan, the Wilton 6-Mini Ball pan and a Wilton 6″ round for the smash cake. I made homemade fondant and dyed the colors as close as I could to the candle colors. From there I just baked the cakes as usual, covered the #1 cake with fondant and then the mini balls were cut to fit similar to the movements of the caterpillar on the candle. I then covered each section in its colored fondant and used toothpicks to hold the balls onto the main cake.
I used lollipop sticks for the antenna rolled with fondant and a ball of fondant at the top. The legs were balls of fondant inserted with toothpicks to stick to the cake as well.
