For this Barbie Princess cake I started with two heart shaped pans and made the base (small heart on top of large heart). I then used a small dress pan that bakes four dresses at a time. I also purchased the small doll torso from Michaels. I tried matching hair color for each princess I created.
I decorated each doll according to the color dress they wear. I bought decorator’s icing from Walmart. One large tub is more than enough. I suggest using different tips for each princess to give the cake versatility.
Once you decorate the dolls let them sit for an hour or two. Once the icing sticks you can decorate your base. Then, using a spatula move your dolls into position. Since there were 8 dresses and 6 princesses we used the last two as decorations. They were freely decorated and we placed crowns and flags on top of them.
Another idea is to make a banner that says Happy Birthday – use two toothpicks to hold it up. This is real time consuming so make sure you give yourself plenty of decorating time.
My daughter loved this cake, as did all her guests. To be fair we played a game in which the girls picked apples that either said doll or thanks for playing. That really helped in deciding who got one of the princesses off the cake.
