This boy scout camping cake was for the Boy Scout cake walk for my sons pack. He designed the cake and then I scoured the Internet to figure out how to make it!
The cake is a half sheet chocolate with homemade buttercream. For the river I thinned the icing out a little more and made ripples in the water with a butter knife. Also added edible glitter to make it sparkle.
The tents are graham crackers held together with candy melts and then covered in gumpaste. The people, signs, trefoil and fish are gumpaste. The fire ring is made of raisinets, broken pretzel sticks, melted jolly ranchers to look like flames, ground up graham crackers.
Backpacks, bridge, canoe, logs around fire and sticks for marshmallows are tootsie rolls. The trees are sugar cones covered in buttercream using a star tip.
Cake is bordered on two sides by mini s’mores, the other two sides by raisinets.
My son was hoping to get his own cake back in the cakewalk..but it was the first cake chosen, which he did think was cool.
This was my first time using gumpaste (bought the Wilton mix), and it was pretty easy and I could make those pieces a few days before the cake, which was great. Hope you like our cake!
