Butterfly Garden Cake

Made this for my daughter’s 1st Birthday. The flowers are silk from Michaels (pink hydrangea and roses) and I ordered the butterflies from The Butterfly Grove website. I used #20 wire, wrapped it around a pen to create spirals then attached some of the butterflies and silver balls to the ends to create movement. I wired the flowers, smaller butterflies and curly ribbon together into three large bouquets and one small one, then wrapped the stems of each assembly with aluminum foil to prevent any small pieces of wire or covering from coming off inside of the cake when the bouquet was inserted (make sure none of the foil will show once the bouquet is inserted). The cake is a simple white 1/2 sheet cake piped with pink roses and ruffle edging with pink sugar roses and leaves in the center. The small icing flowers are on toothpicks to allow ease of placement and to create a 3-D effect. Use a sturdy cake board to support the weight and use a few dabs of icing to “cement” the cake to the board then pipe the ruffle edging. The large pink butterfly in the middle of the cake is a clip on I found at Michaels and just clipped to the silk hydrangea.
