We had just adopted a family of chinchillas so of course when my husband’s birthday came around the kids said “let’s make dad a chinchilla cake!”(I think they like coming up with impossible tasks for me). I hunted everywhere and there was nothing to reference other than the furry little critters in our family room. I finally decided to make the body in the Wiltons egg pan.
I leveled the tops of the cakes and used those pieces for the haunches attaching them with skewers. I also baked a cupcake and cut off the dome and used half for each ear again attaching with skewers. I crumb coated in white buttercream then tinted the frosting a grayish color and covered it all over using the grass or fur tip. Then added details mouth, eyes and inside of ears. I used tip #12 to pipe the legs and toes. My daughter helped me refer to a picture of one of our chins while I was making the cake.
