I made this cake for the Groom’s cake at a wedding, following instructions from Coolest Drum Cake 7. Thank you for the great step by step guide. It gave me the confidence to make this cake.
The cake used 3 chocolate box mixes in 2 12″ pans. I used buttercream frosting except for the drum head which is covered with fondant with the ‘Pearl’ logo written in edible ink. The cymbal is a paper plate sprayed in gold and glued on ‘Zildjian’ that was cut out of paper after being printed off the Internet. The cymbal is held on a foil wrapped dowel with foam craft shapes used as the “nuts”. And the dowel is inserted into a hole drilled into the round wood cake board which was covered with Wilton wrapping paper for cakes.
The tension clips are KitKats and sugar sticks sprayed painted with Wilton’s Silver edible spray paint. And the rims are shiny chrome ribbon from the craft store. Look closely and see the drumsticks are engraved with the groom and bride’s names and the other one with the date – that was a cool addition.
The groom is a drummer, of course, and his first words upon seeing the cake was “Wow, I didn’t think it was going to look so real”. With that comment I knew I accomplished my goal. AND the cake tasted good too.
