My 2 year old son is obsessed with the character Finn Mcmissile from the movie Cars 2 so I decided to make him a Finn Mcmissile birthday cake for his 2nd birthday. I baked two banana chocolate cakes using a rectangular shaped tin for the base and a square one for the top of the car.
Ingredients:
- 4oz butter or margarine
- 6oz sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 big bananas
- 8oz self-raising flour
I mashed the bananas. Creamed the butter and sugar together and mixed in the eggs. Then mixed together the two yellow sludges, and the flour. I added about 1 tsp of cocoa powder to give it a bit more flavor. Scraped the mixture into the tins and baked for about 50-60 minutes.
I used the Finn Mcmissile toy as a model and cut the square cake into the shape that I wanted and used as the top. I then used two ready made Swiss rolls (cut in half) as the headlamps. I used some of the unused cake from the square tin to make the ridges at the back. I covered the cake with butter cream icing (about 3lbs).
Once I got the cake in the shape that I wanted, I prepared the fondant. I bought a baby blue ready to roll fondant but the color was unfortunately way too green. I had to put some blue coloring in the fondant. However the color was still not right. Luckily I had a silver food coloring spray by Wilton which saved the day and gave the cake a nice finish and color.
Then I cut out some white fondant for the eyes and used colored icing to make the pupils, mouth and other details of the car. The details were not too difficult to make and I only needed to use a little bit of orange, green, grey and black icing. For the wheels, I used soft Oreo cookies and rolled a thin layer of black icing to cover them. I spent about 3-4 hours to put the cake together. Here’re some photos and both my sons were super super excited and very happy with the cake.
