I was asked to make a cake for a young lady turning 12 years old on 12/12/12. Her color theme for the party was pink and red, and she wanted rock candy somehow incorporated into the cake. I didn’t have a clue what I was going to do with this idea! After much thought, I figured out just how I wanted this cake to look. I made a three tier red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. I then made marshmallow fondant, and covered my cake with it. Believe it or not, it was not that easy to find rock candy strings. I ended up purchasing them in a retro candy shop in NYC, along with some rock candy pops. I draped the rock candy down the sides of the cake, using butter cream frosting to adhere it to the fondant on the cake. I used the pops for the top tier, and had them sticking out. I loved the way it came out!
Day of the party: Imagine 30 or so children rushing toward you screaming, “Wow, that cake is so cool” . I was nervous about how the cake would be received but not after that reception! By the way, it tasted as good as it looked. Whew!
