I made this Vikings birthday cake for my husband who is a huge Minessota Vikings fan. He’s not that into chocolate cake either which my daughter’s are so I made the bottom layer a chocolate cake and especially for my husband I made the helmet cake an orange cake.
For the shape of the helmet, I caked the cake in a small stainless steel mixing bowl! I just lined it with greased parchment but the shape came out quite good. I did struggle with the horns and started off trying to form them in cake and then cover them in fondant but i just couldn’t get the shape right and the fondant wouldn’t stick so in the end I made them out of large pieces of fondant. I then had the worry that they were too heavy to attach to the cake so I had to use timber skewers through the depth of the cake to make sure they didn’t fall off or pull the cake apart!
