I have always loved Cookie Monster and knew he had to be the theme of my child’s 1st birthday, with or without the approval of daddy. Ha ha!
Making the Cookie Monster Cake
I wanted to do everything myself (short of making the dough from scratch), so I purchased cake mixes in the box from the store and with the help of a friend learned how to make buttercream icing from scratch.
Buttercream Icing Ingredients
- 8 cups of powdered sugar
- 4 sticks of unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons of vanilla
Buttercream Icing Instructions
- I beat the ingredients together to the desired consistency.
- I then separated the icing into different containers to mix the colors needed for Cookie Monster.
- I used icing dye colors and made, blue, black, white, and even tan (tan was for the “chocolate chip cookie” looking cupcakes I made in addition to Cookie Monster).
Decorating wasn’t too challenging for me as I had cookie decorating training from my previous job. I did use disposable icing bags from the craft store and had the “hair” tip and #16 star tip as well as a few others to help with making Cookie Monster look real and textured. I used icing to create googly eyes but used 1/2 of a side of Oreo cookie for the mouth.
I also made my son his own small Cookie Monster face cake (for his smash cake), a half-sheet Cookie Monster cake, a 13″ round chocolate chip pan cookie, and I decorated sugar cookies with Cookie Monster’s face to include in the party favors I created.
