I made this 2nd Birthday Caterpillar Cake for my daughter! It was an absolute hit. The cake was super easy to do. I bought the sports ball cake pan, and used 4 store cake mixes. I used 4 different cake mixes to create more fun. I kept them in halves so I had 8 total to create a more dynamic caterpillar, that would stretch along the board.
I baked the cakes ahead of time, and put them in the freezer until I was ready to use them. The day before the party I let the cakes thaw until they were room temperature to decorate. I cheated on the frosting. I bought ready made frosting (4.5 lb tub). I bought food coloring paste in an assortment of bright colors for the kiddos to enjoy. I bought the plastic, throw away, decorating bags, and a few larger decorating tips to create different textures on the cake.
I used 5 different colors, and decorated the cake in fun patterns. The frosting took about 3 hours to create the master piece, but was well worth the time, and hand cramps! Before the cake was cut, my daughter was sneaking frosting off one of the caterpillars! I would do that again.
Fun project and received great feedback.
