I made this Angry Birds cake for my son’s 12th birthday last December.
As we were going away on a 2.5 weeks vacation and will only be back a few days before his birthday, I modeled the figurines 3 weeks in advance. I added gum-tex to the fondant that I used to model the figurines so that they dry faster and harder. First roll out balls to the size desired before adding the eyes and beaks. The beaks were molded freehand while I used the various sizes of the piping tips to cut out the eyes. The completed figurines were left out to dry before being stored in air-tight containers and stored in a cool place.
When I was ready to decorate the cake, the figurines went onto the fondant covered cake and base, attached with edible glue.
I’m glad I modeled the figurines from fondant rather than use toy toppers. The effect was amazing and I received many compliments. Most importantly, my son loved it!
