I made this 3D R2D2 Birthday Cake for a friend whose son who loves Star Wars. This was my first 3 dimensional cake ever and was quite a challenge. It was also my first time sculpting with marshmallow cereal treats. The legs are made from cereal treats, covered in frosting then covered in fondant.
The cake was made from 3 2″ round cake pans. Each cake was cut in 1/2 and filled with Oreo butter cream to add more height. After stacking the first 4 layers I added some straws for support then placed a few cake circles on top before adding the head which was make from the remaining cake cut into 3 layers and carved to give it a rounded shape.
Adding the head separate from the body allowed for easier cutting and serving of the cake. The head is covered in grey fondant and then was painted with edible silver paint, while the body is also covered in white fondant with fondant decorations added. Oh and the entire cake is sitting on top of a small tin can that I covered in black fondant, and is the only non-edible part of the cake.
