I used the Thomas the Train cake kit, but you could do it just as easily without it. Using a 1/2 sheet cake, cut section C from the front (6-7″ X 11″). This is the base and should be iced gray. The next section will be the same size (6-7″ X 11″) but will be split down the middle, stacked together, then iced blue. Stack this iced piece on the back of the base (it should be even with the base on three sides).
The last section should be 4″ X 11″, but you may need to trim the long sides slightly. Stack these two pieces, ice blue, then place on top of the cake to make the front of the train. They will lie opposite of the back section you stacked. Carve the top sides slightly to make it rounded (if you are not sure of the sizes, use a large piece of paper to draw it out first). Slice a cupcake to form the humps on each side.
It is very difficult to do the trim as in the instructions, so I ended up using fondant which made it much easier – used this for the red trim that separates the gray base from the blue train sections. Also used black fondant where the blue section meets his face. The rest was piped with red icing – tip 3. I also trimmed the edged of the train with tip 5, but I think it would have looked better without this. I placed the plastic pieces as in the picture, but you could have easily used icing or fondant to make these.
Also, his face was a DVD holder, but I think you could use fondant or icing as well. I added Hershey pieces to make the “track”.
