This 50s Skirt Cake was made of boxed lemon flavored cake mix and the fondant is home made also lemon flavored. I followed the directions on the box and made one 14 inch round and a 12 inch round. With the help of internet research and many calls to my cousin (who makes beautiful cakes) I was able to carve and piece together all the pieces. The “glue” was frosting.
The chest was made from the pieces that I craved off the shape the skirt. I sliced the cake horizontally and filled it with lemon flavored pudding. The fondant was made from marshmallow and powdered sugar and the lemon flavoring. The whole thing turned into a three day process.
This cake was made for my mother’s 70th birthday, which was a fifties theme. The party was a surprise and her cake not only surprised her but it was made exactly like the outfit I made her for the party. The cake was a total success, and my proudest moment, it was my first fondant cake. It must have been good because people went back for seconds.
It was much fun and I would encourage anyone to try it. I did have a back up plan (a quick trip to the local supermarket for a sheet cake.)
