This Alien Cupcake Cake was for my son’s 5th birthday party. They were so much fun to make and the kids LOVED them. Granted, they only ate the candy and icing off of them, but that’s what usually happens with cupcakes anyway, I guess!
I baked the cupcakes in tinfoil cupcake holders for a spaceship look. I then used a little bit of white icing in the middle to “glue down” a big marshmallow. I used a very small tip to pipe the little green men onto the marshmallow, and used cornstarch to smooth it with my fingers. Then I used a larger tip to ice grey icing all around the marshmallow, making it look like he is sitting in a flying saucer.
I put miniature M&M’s (which I finally found in the baker’s aisle at the grocery store) all around the spaceship. I got lots of help with that part!
Here is the part where you can LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE. A July birthday in Florida is well, HUMID!! I unwrapped dum-dums and poked them down through the marshmallows into the cupcake. I woke up the next morning to find the dum-dums in various stages of melting all over the cupcakes! It was a big mess. This one was not made until the morning of the party, so it looks better than most of the others. Anyway, wait until the last minute to stick in the dum-dums. Have an Out of this World birthday party!
