This cake was inspired by several images from this website. My Grandson wanted an army tank birthday cake for his 5th birthday which had an ‘army camo’ theme.
He wanted a chocolate and hazelnut cake (he had picked and shelled all of the hazelnuts required for the flour himself!), which I made the bottom part of the cake out of using a great Nigel Slater recipe which produces a firm but moist cake. I made a 20cm round cake which I then shaved the sides off. The top part is a separate piece made out of a chocolate muffin which didn’t need much cutting or shaping at all.
The cake is covered in royal icing coloured by a mixture of green and orange food colouring.
The wheels (is this what they’re called???) of the tank are chocolate Oreo cookies. I used a wide licorice strap to create the tracks. I also used half an Oreo for the lid which sits behind the army man and I used a semi-circular piece of icing from one of the biscuits to create the illusion of a hole around the army man’s upper body.
The head lights (which were put on mainly to brighten up the cake) are Jaffa candies cut in half. Jaffas are an iconic Kiwi sweet which may not be available in other parts of the world, but I’m sure there are plenty of substitutes!
The gun is a licorice log with a hard chocolate centre. They’re delicious so when it came time to cut the cake, there was quite a fuss over who was going to be the lucky recipient – the birthday boy was the winner!
