I was inspired to create this Baby Shower Cake using ideas from this site! The Mommy-to-be decorated the baby’s room in a jungle-theme so we created a shower with that in mind. I baked two cakes (from boxes); one milk chocolate and one yellow. I covered them in chocolate frosting (and added mini chocolate chips to the center) and then covered both tiers in chocolate fondant. I used cake boards & dowels to tier the cakes.
I created the baby’s butt using a small, ~3” round cake pan (it was just light enough to place the baby directly on the top tier without a board/dowels). I covered the small cake in chocolate frosting; then white fondant molding it to create a rounded shape. I sculpted the legs/feet using ivory-tinted white fondant.
I rolled out moss-tinted fondant and used a Wilton decorating comb to gently create the impressions on the blanket (ran the comb over it twice, creating a diamond pattern). I then gently covered the baby (creating folds as I went).
The zebra stripes were created by rolling out two strips of white fondant (two strips were easier to wrap versus one large one around the base of the cakes). I tinted some of the fondant with black and pressed small “stripes” onto the white strips before wrapping the base of the cake (Be careful as the black color can run – you don’t want to move the stripes around once they are placed on the white fondant).
The giraffe “spots” were created using copper-tinted white fondant that I pressed onto the ivory-tinted strip. So much fun and a big hit!
This cake is truly amazing. What a great idea and I absolutely loved it!!! Keep up the fabulous ideas and baking….you’ve got talent!
