Sweet Homemade Night Themed Baby Shower Cake Design

This Baby Shower Cake Design is a cake I made for my stepdaughter’s baby shower. It was a little time consuming, and the fondant decorations need to be started several days ahead of time, but it was fun. The end result was worth it.

Both tiers were a dense, chocolate-chocolate chip cake that could hold up to stacking. Layers were filled with a strawberry truffle filling that I made by whipping heavy cream til pretty stiff, mixing in some powdered sugar, crushed strawberries, pure vanilla, and a little strawberry gelatin powder.

I crumb coated (spread a thin layer of buttercream frosting) both tiers and let crust over. I then frosted each tier with a nice coating of blue tinted homemade buttercream frosting.

To assemble them, I inserted 5 dowel rods into bottom tier, placed top tier on a cardboard cake round (needs to be exact diameter of cake it’s holding) and centered the top tier directly on top of the dowels.

Once you’ve done that, the rest is just decorating. The whole cake is done with buttercream except of course for the top decorations. Those are made with fondant, some tinted yellow and rolled out for moon and stars, sprinkled with yellow sugar and left to dry for a few days.

I just free handed the baby and blanket. It was the first time I’d ever worked with fondant, so I just did my best. The little feet were really fun.

This was a fun cake to make, and it was a huge hit.
