My daughter decided she wanted a “Barbie and The Diamond Castle” theme for her 4th birthday. My father and husband decided that I should make all the kids birthday cakes this year to save money. So I decided to comply with all of their wishes. I did however decide if I was going to do it, I wanted to make a “practice” one, and I am so glad I did.
The cake was made by using the “Wilton Wonder Mold Cake Pan” on top of two 9″ round cake pans. I just used the doll that came with the “Wonder Mold Pan” for this “practice” cake, “Alexa” the actual Barbie from the movie will be used in the real party cake.
I stacked the cakes and used “Betty Crocker White Whipped Frosting” between the layers. Then I tinted all the colors for the decorating on the outside of the cake using the “Wilton Ready To Use Decorators White Icing” in the tub. First I smoothed the purple all over it. Then I piped little stars using a #16 tip for the two different colors of pink on the skirt. I used a #5 tip to pipe the blue design.
Then I used “Wilton Pink Sparkle Gel” for the outline of the two sections of her skirt and the lines around the blue piping. I sprinkled “Wilton Pink Colored Sugar” onto the two pink skirt colors. Then I piped the trim around the bottom. The last thing I did was spread some of the decorators icing on the doll and sprinkle it with pink and purple colored sugar to make her top.
I am making the actual cake for her party in a few weeks and will be making some changes to make it better. I will make my own pink sparkle icing to outline the two pink sections and make the lines around the blue piping by mixing pink colored sugar with pink tinted icing, it will make cleaner lines. I will also use a smaller tip for the piping of the blue design, the #5 was just way too thick.
