I made this Barbie cake for a friend’s daughter who was turning 4. I hired the Wilton cake tin from a local cake decorating center. The cake was a vanilla buttercake that was tinted with pink food colouring.
Once the cake was cool I placed it onto a board (larger than the cake – I used a 15 inch board)and outlined the whole cake using buttercream icing I tinted in pink and lavender. I then positioned the plastic Barbie face and torso onto the cake using icing to “adhere”.
I then used a piping bag with a star tip to fill in the outlined areas (making sure to cover over the plastic insert). It is easier to do one colour at a time and complete all sections of this colour with your piped “stars”. I then used white buttercream icing to pipe the background of the cake and the sides.
You can then finish the cake by piping around the base with more stars in one of the cake colours or use a shell border. I then added some plain swirls on the hearts and some hearts and flowers on the cake board for decoration.
My friend’s daughter was very excited to see her Barbie cake and all of the party guests loved it!
