My boy Phillip turned 1 year old on 16 Jan 2012. He absolutely adores animals, all kinds, so I decided on a cheerful farm-themed birthday party.
I used a large sheet cake for the ‘farm yard’ and cut a second sheet of cake into 4 pieces, stacked them and shaped the top to form the Barn.
I used milk-chocolate ganache for the filling between the layers, and also for the roof of the barn. I used green colored butter cream icing for the farm yard, (finished off by some green vermicelli for ‘grass’), and red butter cream icing for the barn. All the animals, trimmings and details for the rest of the cake, were made from plastic icing (sugar paste). Of course, I also had to make a dog, Phillip’s favorite animal (his first word was woof-woof!)
To support the weight of the ‘barn’ on top of the cake sheet, I strengthened the bottom cake with 9 dowels. The sugar-animals also were quite heavy, so I decided to make little green ‘platforms’ for them, to help with spreading the weight of the figurines when I placed them on the cake.
I made smaller versions of cows, horses, pigs and sheep, to put on each cup cake – these served as party favors for the kids to take home!
