I made this baseball cake for my nephew’s 2nd birthday. I baked 2 10″ square sheet cakes and leveled them each to about 1 1/2″. I also used Wilton’s ball pan for the baseball on top. I did not use dowels or supports to support the baseball, although I should have.
I purchased fondant online from Satin Ice (pre-colored). I tried to color white fondant but I wasn’t able to get a deep enough green. It was worth the price…..The baselines are brown sugar on top of a thin layer of buttercream, and the bases are gumpaste.
I made the buttercream from scratch, and if you want a bright white, make sure you use all vegetable shortening. My piping skills aren’t the best, so I purchased sugar letters and baseball gloves for the size of the cake. I used a #16 star tip for the baseball, and red decorating gel for the stitches.
The cake was actually pretty simple, and was my first attempt at anything other than a round layered cake.
