I love baking cakes and I only need an excuse to get started. My Husband’s birthday is January 1st and he was 53 and I just had to make him a cake.
He likes to go to the pub to relax and I decided I wanted to make a beer barrel cake. This is how I made it:
I only made a small cake because of all the goodies we’d eat during the festive season. I made a 6” round cake in vanilla sponge when cold I filled with jam and butter cream and then I shaped the cake slightly like a barrel shape. I then covered in butter cream and chilled in the freezer.
I coloured some icing in light brown and then added small amounts of dark brown and kneaded until it looked like wood grain effect. I then rolled this out and cut out a circle big enough to cover the top of the cake. Afterwards, I cut out strips the same size and attached to the sides of the cake when it was chilled and then went on to make the tap on the barrel.
I then coloured some icing in black and made two bands to attach around the top and bottom edge of the barrel.
In a light brown icing I covered the cake board and made a floorboard pattern onto it using a modelling tool.
I now made a man starting with white for the t shirt and then made the jeans and trainers. I coloured the icing in a flesh colour and made the head and arms. I then cut out two white circles for the eyes using a piping tube and then drew on the pupil with edible food colouring and made the hair.
All I needed to do now was make the happy birthday sign.
He loved it and he knew he’d have a cake but had no idea what it would be.
