Coolest Beer Can Cake

I decided to make this beer can cake for my schools building administrator, the night before his birthday. We were amused to find out that the other was, not only a “cheap beer drinker”, but that we preferred the same kind. Since I was under no pressure to make it, I wasn’t concerned if it didn’t turn out. I grabbed a can from the fridge and got started.

Once I got the right shade of blue, it was just a matter of working from my slanted lines. I was sure the mountains would not look ANYTHING like they should, and would be the determining factor of taking a cake the next morning or grabbing a fork for a late night snack. I remembered my elementary art teacher making us turn a picture upside down before drawing it, so we could draw what we saw, not what we THINK it should look like. I turned my can and my cake around and didn’t look at it until I was finished.

I frosted the side where the top of the can is, with gray, then added a tiny amount of black to darken slightly (for subtle contrast) and made a 3-D tab. I think I enjoyed the little details (ounces, eagle, etc.) more than anything.

The next morning, school was closed due to snow. Since an elementary school is no place for a beer cake, it ended up being perfect. I took it in (no students) and he loved it!

Since I just randomly make cakes for fun, I love that I can enjoy the “laid back, doesn’t have to be perfect” approach. No matter how much you mess up, they still taste great!
